Whale’s Wake is an original play by Amy Sass produced by Ragged Wing Ensemble at The Flight Deck. Funny, sexy, incantatory, Whale’s Wake follows one family’s struggle to honor the difficult dead. This ambitious dark comedy about a family dealing with the sudden death of their patriarch engages the audience in a sweeping story that moves from slapstick and religious satire to haunting, abstract, poetic images to explore major themes about the meaning of life, death, and family.

Q. What was the inspiration behind the event?
In 2013, Amy Sass lost her father at the age of 61 and witnessed a beached whale at Stinson Beach. Whale’s Wake was born. This 3-year journey to bring this show to audiences involved dozens of drafts, dozens of artists, and the birth of a truly unique theatrical world on stage.
