JULY 2016 | EVENT
On Saturday, July 23rd, Root & Rebound is throwing our second annual Summer Benefit to celebrate and raise funds to sustain our work innovating, creating, and collaborating for everyone’s right to a second chance. The night at local art gallery and event space, Oakstop in downtown Oakland will be filled with delicious food by The Town Kitchen, local beer and wine, live music from young performers from RYSE in Richmond, spoken word poetry, and an auction.
Q. What was the inspiration behind the event?
Root & Rebound is a nonprofit legal advocacy center based in Oakland, CA whose mission is to reduce barriers to opportunity for people returning home from prison and jail. With three key programs, direct legal services with social services support, legal & community education, and high-impact policy advocacy, Root & Rebound has a statewide focus and aims to expand its work across the country. We are hoping to raise the money necessary to expand our publications and education and support our policy reform work. Reentry is a huge ongoing issue for Oakland and the greater Bay Area community, and Root & Rebound was founded after analysis of existing reentry infrastructure in California. From research, Root & Rebound’s attorneys found a severe gap in the reentry field, and a void of legal expertise in the space. This event is meant to celebrate the work we are continuing to do to create opportunities for reentry and foster second chances.
Q Tell us in one sentence why attendees love the event.
Attendees will appreciate the comfortable space with good food and drinks, a silent auction, and entertainment as a way that celebrates the work of our organization and raises awareness for the cause.
Q What’s the best thing about holding the event in Oakland?
Our connection to Oakland and the Alameda County community is important to us, especially because much of the work we do is aimed locally. All of Root & Rebound’s services are designed primarily for the adult reentry population in Alameda County with an aim to take best practices and apply them throughout California. We have worked to distribute our educational guides and materials throughout the community, and we attend community events to learn and stay connected. Our attorneys deliver most community-based trainings in Oakland and Alameda County, and therefore our organization is deeply connected to the city and community.
Q Does your event partner with local businesses in Oakland?
It is important to us to work with local businesses in putting on this event. In addition to working with The Town Kitchen for catering, RYSE in Richmond for entertainment, we are working with several local breweries including Independent Brewing Company.
Q What’s the one thing Oakland offers that makes it the best place for your event?
Oakland has an incredible network of nonprofits working to accomplish community betterment and progress, as well as a unique cultural vibrancy. This is the perfect combination for an event like this to celebrate both the work we do and the community that helps to support us.
Q What is the one thing you want everyone to know about this event?
This gathering will be a time to celebrate Root & Rebound’s work– almost three years now–innovating, creating, and collaborating for everyone’s right to a second chance. We hope to see you there!
