September 2015 | EVENT
How long has this event been in Oakland? 3 years
Love our Lake Day is a free open streets event that encourages folks to walk, ride, skate, stroll and dance their way around the lake. Different from a street fair, there is no marketplace/vending (aside from food); all the booths and participants are activity hosts offering the public chances to draw, paint, do yoga, and more – all in the street.
Q: What was the inspiration behind the event?
Love Our Lake Day, formerly known as Oaklavia, was inspired by the “Ciclovia”, which originated in Bogotá, Colombia. Ciclovia events are now happening in 20 countries across the globe; Ciclovia “Sunday Streets” events are also happening in San Francisco, Berkeley and on San Pablo Ave. here in Oakland. WOBO, under the moniker “East Bay Open Streets” is heading up the three East Bay open street events, Love Our Lake Day, Love Our Neighborhood Day (May), and Sunday Streets Berkeley (Oct. 18).
Q: Tell us in one sentence why attendees love the event.
The Oakland community loves a street party, but more than that, they seem to love happy occasions to come together as a community and play – Love Our Lake Day gives them the chance to do more than walk the lake, it offers all a chance to relish the joys of Oakland’s great weather, food, diversity, music, dance, and welcoming spirit – all while literally playing in the street.
Q: What’s the best thing about holding the event in Oakland?
The list of reasons to hold an event like this is long, though having the opportunity to have this community event alongside the beauty of Lake Merritt makes the day that much more special, and further brings home the healthy-living aspects of Ciclovia-type events.
Q: Does your event partner with local businesses in Oakland?
Yes, we have East Bay Express as a media partner and have a growing list of event sponsors/supporters including Oakland businesses, neighborhood groups, and the City.
Q: What’s the one thing Oakland offers that makes it the best place for your event?
The people! Oakland as a wonderfully diverse community is in a place where it is welcoming and encouraging to health-oriented events, and has shown it loves to come out to the lake to play. The community also rallies behind home-grown groups and activities, and our event offers non-profits and performers alike the chance to shine.
Q: What is the one thing you want everyone to know about this event?
All are welcome to this free event – this is a family and grown-up friendly day at the lake.
