Oakland is said to have more artists per capita than any urban area in the United States. ArtPlace America named Oakland one of the top art destinations in the country in 2013, and we were not surprised. Art lovers who choose to live and visit play a part in Oakland’s vibrant and creative scene. Art and culture in Oakland also extend far beyond the art galleries. Art can be found in our building murals, in our independent stores, and even on our streets. From the moment you step into Downtown Oakland you will be surrounded by the culture that makes Oakland unique. The Great Wall of Oakland is a 100′x100′ projection installation in Oakland’s Uptown District that provides high-quality art production for the general public and supports artists in developing new work. On average, roughly 25,000 people interact with the Great Wall of Oakland each year. Downtown Oakland also hosts many festivals like the Oakland Music Festival and Art + Soul.
