Archer Bicycle

SHOPPING

www.facebook.com/archerbicycle
Archer Bicycle is a bike shop whose main focus is NOT selling you a bike (although we are happy to do so). We want you, and whatever bike you own, to be well cared for. We want to make sure that the bike runs as well as it can, and that you understand its ins and outs. As a bonus, we have an art gallery upstairs!

Q. What inspired you to start your business?
When I opened Archer Bicycle, the goal was to have a “service station” for bikes. I wanted to have a place where no matter what you rode, you’d get great service at a reasonable price. Basically, our philosophy is that any bike you use and enjoy is a GOOD bike.

Q. Tell us in one sentence why your customers love your business?
Customers love the business because they get an excellent mechanic, awesome customer service, and reasonable prices. (Check out Yelp; it must be working!)

Q. What’s the best thing about doing business in Oakland?
Downtown Oakland was a gamble for me. I was relatively new to the area and there were no other bike shops nearby. I didn’t know if the location would support a good bike shop I figured it would either turn out to be a really good, or a really bad, decision. I started suspecting it was going to work out, when, within the first few days of signing a lease, people walking by stopped and said, “A bike shop is coming? Great!”

Q. What are some of your favorite local businesses in Oakland?
I have the good fortune of having a number of great shops in my neighborhood. My little slice of downtown has a barber/hair salon(“Blade the Barber/Drastic Changes”), a bookstore (“Wolfman Books”), a coffee shop (“Modern Coffee”), a bar dating back to the 1920’s (“Radio”), the “Tribune Tavern” (good eats, nice bar), and for those with a vegetarian persuasion, the “Golden Lotus.” The newest addition to our block is “CamBurger,” and the “Mockingbird” restaurant is due to open this summer. In addition, along with our art gallery, there is another art venue across the street, “Good Mother.” We also have the absolutely gorgeous Tribune Tower anchoring the block.

Number of years in Oakland? 2.5

I own boutique PR agency Ruby Press and wrote a city guide/travel book about Oakland called “This is Oakland: A Guide to the City’s Most Interesting Places”. At Ruby Press, we provide public relations services for lifestyle clients around the globe (and here in Oakland!), including those in the food/beverage, design, fashion, and beauty industries.

Q. What inspired you to start your business?
I started Ruby Press back in 2001. I was a fashion editor in NYC prior to moving to California in 2000, and was so wowed by the talent I came across in the Bay Area that I started a PR agency to help spread the word about what was happening here. I broadened my scope pretty quickly to work with clients as far away as Australia, but the SF Bay Area has always been very important to me and to Ruby Press.

Q. Tell us in one sentence why your customers love your business.
At Ruby Press, our clients tell us that they appreciate that we are authentic, thoughtful, and enthusiastic about their brands- and they appreciate that we have excellent relationships with the media.

Q. What’s the best thing about doing business in Oakland?
We love it all! The lunch options are spectacular- its’ sometimes hard to choose, we have so many top-notch spots. We love the convenience- there’s a BART stop at our building’s front door and by car, we can be on the highway within 3 minutes. Our building is a gorgeous, historic space with a great view and the best doorman in Oakland. I have lived in Oakland for 12 years and was so happy to move my business here in 2013.

Q. What are some of your favorite local businesses in Oakland?
We are lucky that we get to work with some of our very favorite Oakland spots- Dona Tomas, Miette, Fenton’s Creamery, Flora, and Xolo. It’s so hard for me to pick just a few- but my book profiles 90 businesses that I truly love in this city.
