Insider Guide to Making the Most of Art & Soul Festival

Art&Soul Oakland 2017

Get there Quickly and Conveniently – Take Transit: Avoid the driving/parking blues and take public transit – BART, Amtrak, AC Transit, SF Bay Ferry, or try Ford’s new GoBike bike share program. If you ride your own bike, there will be free attended bike parking service available both days at the 14th Street & Broadway festival entrances.

Think like a Scout – Be Prepared: Summertime in Oakland can be unpredictable. Be ready for it all by packing sunscreen, layers, and a reusable water vessel you can refill at water stations. And don’t forget to don some cool shades representing The Town. Be sure to pick some up at Oakland Central’s booth #102 across from City Hall and learn about all the things to do in Oakland while you’re there!

Location, Location, Location-Designate a Meet-up Spot: Festivals are more fun with friends. To avoid texting or calling them during the event, pick a designated spot ahead of time and reserve your phone battery for IG stories and Snaps (don’t forget to tag #OaklandCentral in all your festival fun!). Here are the main entrance locations and key landmarks:

14th Street & Broadway: Walgreens, Downtown Wine Merchants, and Rite Aid. These locations border the corner of 14th & Broadway.

16th Street & San Pablo: End of San Pablo near the Bruce Beasley statue

Promenade beside City Center West Garage (off Martin Luther King Jr. Way between 12th and 14th Street

All in the Family – Make a Parent Plan: Art & Soul is all about family fun! There will be kid-friendly carnival rides, a petting zoo, interactive art and other great activities, making it super exciting for kids. Plan ahead and identify a meeting place just in case you get separated. Also, be sure to point out Art & Soul staff and security to your kids so they know who to reach out to for help. But most of all be sure to have FUN!

Sip and Savor – Enjoy All the Local Flavors: First things first – bringing alcoholic beverages into the festival is not allowed. Never fear, there will be beer, wine, and lots of tasty food vendors onsite. The hardest part will be making room to taste a little bit of everything – so buddy up and go halfsies on twice as many bomb bites. Bonus tip: don’t just settle for your closest food vendor because you are starving and want food NOW, do a walkthrough first to see all of the different offerings. Remember, help Oakland go green and compost your food service items in composting bins located around the festival grounds.

Groovin’ to the Music – Scope Your Stage Strategy: Art & Soul is awesome because of the fantastic lineup of popular artists and hot, local talent featuring: Goapele, Los Rakas, Angie Stone, and more! Visit the website ahead of time to find who you want to see and when they will be onstage. Arrive to the stage early for a seat or a good spot to groove to the music.

So, go out and make it a GREAT day at Art & Soul. For more information on what to do in Downtown Oakland visit Explore page and ‘Like’ our Facebook page.

PIC 217 Photo Contest
Join Oakland's most ePIC Photo

PIC Oakland Photo Contest 2017 is a month-long event accepting photo submissions of anything Oakland from local amateur and professional artists. Created by Shift Local, who advocates for consumers to support indie, locally-owned businesses, we’ve teamed up with local businesses Gondola Servizio, Panorama Framing and Bay Area Custom Prints to provide a unique opportunity for the contest’s Top 10 Finalists to have their winning photo or “pic” professionally printed and framed to be showcased at the PIC Oakland Exhibition that consists of Oakland Galleries: Oakstop, The Flight Deck, Panorama Framing, the 3rd floor at Oakland City Hall and more!

Q. What was the inspiration behind the event?
April Quinn, the owner of Gondola Servizio approached her friends Marc and Mari of Shift Local to create a photo contest to lead up to a book signing event for This Is Oakland by Melissa Davis. Our vision was to create a photo contest accessible to everyone who loves taking pictures and have an opportunity to get their photo featured in an exhibition. We also saw this as an opportunity to engage local businesses to support the local arts community.

Q. What do attendees love most about the event?
All participants love seeing the gallery of Oakland photos accumulated during the contest event.

Q. Do you have any insider tips for people attending the event?
Trust your eye for beauty. You’re sharing your lens of how you see the world so it’s a one-of-a-kind perspective.
